Frequently asked questions

Does Censorly need an internet connection?

No. Censorly processes every photo and PDF entirely on your device. You can use it in airplane mode with the same results.

Can a redaction ever be undone or recovered?

No. Censorly overwrites the underlying pixels rather than placing a box on top of them. Once applied and saved, the original content is not recoverable from the exported file.

What file types does Censorly support?

Photos in JPG and PNG format — including screenshots and photos of physical documents — and PDF files such as bank statements, contracts, and tax forms.

Does Censorly remove metadata too?

Yes. Metadata embedded in images and PDFs — such as location, device information, and timestamps — is stripped automatically before you save your redacted file.

How does facial recognition work in Censorly?

Censorly scans your document on-device to locate faces, then lets you remove them permanently along with any other sensitive areas you select. No facial data is ever sent off your device.

I found a bug. What should I include in my report?

Email support@censorly-app.com with a short description of what happened, your device model, your iOS version, and a screenshot if possible. That's usually enough for us to reproduce most issues quickly.

Is there a desktop version of Censorly?

Yes — Censorly is also available as a Desktop App, so you can redact documents on your Mac or PC using the same on-device approach.
